FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many students are in each class?
Three, at most. Small classes are the heart of Lumos — only in a small group can the teacher truly understand each child’s level and gaps.
How are fees structured?
By the hour: P1–P4 at S$50/hour, P5–P6 at S$60/hour, and S1–S4 at S$70/hour. Billed monthly, usually 4–5 lessons.
Where are the classes held?
Mainly in Woodlands (889D Woodlands Drive 50), with Sunday classes in Jurong East (Blk 134 #04-307E).
What materials do you use?
Ms Ding tailors materials to each student’s level — covering recognition, composition, comprehension, and oral.
How do I enrol or book a trial?
Reach us on WhatsApp (+65 8942 8310) or by email — we reply within one working day.
Do you teach Higher Chinese?
Yes. Higher Chinese is offered at both primary and secondary levels.
How much does Chinese tuition cost in Singapore?
Rates vary widely: large-group classes (10+) typically run S$30–40/hour, while 1-to-1 tuition ranges S$80–150/hour. Lumos offers small-group classes (max 3 students) at transparent rates — S$50/hour for P1–P4, S$60 for P5–P6, and S$70 for S1–S4, billed monthly.
What's the difference between small-group and large-group tuition?
In large classes (8–15 students) teachers can't attend to every child. Lumos keeps classes to 3 students or fewer, so the teacher knows each child's level, gaps and pace — one reason over 80% of our students score AL1.
How do I prepare my child for PSLE Chinese?
PSLE Chinese tests word recognition, composition, comprehension and oral. The key is systematic practice targeted at weak areas. Lumos’s P5–P6 programme focuses on PSLE Chinese and Higher Chinese — composition, comprehension, oral, and past-year paper practice.
Is Higher Chinese difficult? How can my child excel?
Higher Chinese demands a larger vocabulary and stronger writing, but carries advantages for progression and DSA. Lumos offers Higher Chinese at both primary and secondary levels, focusing on advanced composition, comprehension and oral — over 80% of our students score AL1.
What is DSA? Can Chinese help my child enter a top school?
DSA (Direct School Admission) lets students apply to secondary schools on talents such as Chinese before PSLE results. Lumos students have gained DSA entry to Hwa Chong Institution, Dunman High, Nanyang Girls’ High and River Valley High — we provide targeted preparation.
Is there Chinese tuition near Woodlands?
Yes. Lumos’s main centre is at 889D Woodlands Drive 50, near Woodlands MRT (bus 912/912A to the block). Classes of 3 or fewer, for P1–S4 Chinese and Higher Chinese.
Is there Chinese tuition near Jurong East?
Yes. Lumos holds Sunday classes in Jurong East (Blk 134, #04-307E), with the same small-group format and P1–S4 Chinese and Higher Chinese programme as our Woodlands centre.
What age should my child start Chinese tuition?
Earlier is better for building a Chinese foundation. Lumos teaches from P1 through secondary (P1–S4) — lower primary focuses on recognition, reading and early writing, while upper primary and secondary focus on exam preparation.
Online vs in-person Chinese lessons — which is better?
Online is convenient, but younger children struggle to focus and miss hands-on correction of writing and expression. In-person small classes let the teacher observe and correct in real time. Lumos offers in-person classes of 3 or fewer for more reliable results.
